So what did I do? I clicked right off 👋🏻 (without opting into anything and definitely without buying something) AND stopped pursuing them on their social media platforms. 🙅🏻♀️

 

I know it might be “judgy” BUT if you have a sucky website is I’m going to make the assumptions that:

🤔You yourself are unclear about what you’re offering and perhaps don’t even believe in the results you provide
🙄You’re “playing” at this business thing and making it a hobby rather than something you’re 100% committed to going all in with
😳You don’t value yourself, your business, or your audience enough to invest in what it takes to fully show up for and support all three of these things

And honestly? I don’t really want to invest MY time, energy, and money into a business that makes me think or feel those things.
On the flipside, when I go to a website that CLEARLY screams their unique value and is so stinkin’ beautiful, it turns me ON. 🔥 It makes me curious to learn more. So I take the time to learn more and dive deep into the magical land that is their website.
I IMMEDIATELY opt-in to whatever the heck their freebie is because I know right away that I need more of this person in my life. 🤩AND I’m a ZILLION times more likely to purchase a service or product from them and shout from the rooftops about how amazeballs they are. 💰Not to mention, I then become a groupie for liiiiife and follow this person religiously on every.single.platform I can. #stalkerstatus 😍

So like it or not, website first impressions ARE a thing (even if you’ve interacted with someone on social media). Wouldn’t you so much fall into the latter example? I know I would!

 

And if you have a shitty website right now, there is NO shame in that. 💩 It’s just time to make a change. It’s time to stop unintentionally stifling your expertise and squashing your sales when you could VERY easily be showcasing your genius and selling your offerings like hot cakes.

I get asked a lot about how to create a brand board and all of the elements on one—like fonts, color palette, logos, icons, textures, patterns, mood boards, etc.

Today I want to share how to create a mood board for your brand since it’s typically the first step of the brand board process. You down?

First things first, let’s look at the difference between a brand board and a mood board so we’re crystal clear on what’s going on.

[ BRAND BOARD ]

As I hinted at above, a brand board encompasses an overview of all of the essential elements that make up your brand. There are no strict rules about what MUST be included, but typically, you’ll see at least a logo, colors, and fonts.

Our mood board is simply a collection of images that helps influence the mood (shocker) of the brand! This is the first step of the brand board process and without it, it’s hard to determine what the heck will be on the brand board in the first place!

[ HOW TO CREATE A MOOD BOARD FOR YOUR BRAND ]

I don’t believe in “rules” when it comes to branding (I’ve never followed them so I don’t see the point in telling others to), but I do believe in sharing what works for me + my clients so you can try things on for size.

When it comes to creating a mood board, I keep things easy.

Step 1

I hop onto Pinterest, make a new board and go pin crazy.

I pin colors I love, textures that feel on-brand, and any images and icons I’m drawn to.

I don’t allow myself to be picky or selective during this process—that’s the next step. The idea is I allow myself to pin whatever resonates with me + the brand I’m creating—it’s more of an intuitive process than anything else.

Step 2

After that, I invite my brand’s values to the party.

Your brand values are 5-7 individual words that describe what your brand stands for and believes in. They are the pillars that your company is founded upon and everything you do and create should tie back to these. Why? Because it creates consistency and consistency creates trust!

I suggest brainstorming a list and writing down whatever comes to mind. Then go back and start to cross some off.

If you have 15 left over, start to group some that are similar together. For example, if you have adventure, silliness, and play, perhaps that can be summarized as playful or any word that you think encompass those three things. You want to try to make sure you’re narrowing down to 5-7 max.

Step 3

I then create sections within my brand’s Pinterest board and I name each section one of my brand’s values.

I then look through the pictures I pinned in Step 1 and assign each to one of the brand value sections (or if it doesn’t fit, I leave them in the main section to see if I’ll use it later in the process or discard it completely).

Step 4

At this point, I have a pretty solid collection of images. I take the images that most resonate with what I’m going for with my brand and drag ’em into an Illustrator document and make a collage out of them. And THAT becomes my brand’s mood board.

I have a next step in the process when it comes to creating my brand’s brand board, but that’s for another time 😜

My First Businesses Failed. But They Taught Me These Important Lessons.

Confession—I cried 4 times looking through pictures this morning—and not pictures of people, but pictures of my very first business.

 

8 years ago I created Ice Queen Cakes. It all started as a joke—I was working out with my trainer, Gregg, at the time and he was hosting an event that was showcasing various health products and services.

 

I told him I was going to sabotage his event by bringing in my ice cream cakes that he loved.

 

He told me only businesses were allowed to showcase their products so I told him that I would have a business by the weekend. He laughed and said, “Okay Lexicles. If you have a business by Saturday, I’ll have a table waiting for you.”

 

Not one to turn down a challenge, I got to work. Anndddd so Ice Queen Cakes was created!

 

I had ZERO fucking clue what I was doing or how to create a business, BUT within 3 months I…
• Had a trademark
• Had a waitlist of cakes being ordered
• Created my own logo, business cards, website, brochures, etc.
• Established a social media presence through my Facebook page and blog
• AND was invited to speak on a TV segment for Young Broadcasters of America

 

If you check out the pictures from this post, you can see my biz was AWKWARD AF and not the most professional looking. But that didn’t stop me.

 

I continued to put myself out there and do things that seemed beyond normal/possible/cool.

 

For example, I was a senior in college during this time and to keep the biz up and running I bought a freezer to keep in our mod (tiny, shitty college housing)…and would put up flyers inviting people to come and buy my cakes. LIKE WHAT? That’s kindddda weird. Not to mention, my price points weren’t really inside the college budget, but like I said, nothing stopped me.

 

I continued to work on my craft and eventually, my cakes got a liiiiitttle more professional and less awkward looking. (You can see the small, but steady progression through the photos.) Ultimately, the business was nahhhht profitable, so I had to shut her down, but the lessons I learned from the experience were priceless.

 

Since then, I’ve lost count of the amount of entrepreneurial pursuits I’ve started…and that have “failed.” However, even amongst the failures, I’ve never stopped.

 

Sure, there have been days, weeks or even MONTHS (like in the beginning of this year), that I’ve felt extremely lost and unsure of what my next step is, but I keep taking the steps, no matter what.

 

I know you have other things to do with your day/night than read this post, so I’ll wrap it up. The point I’m trying to make here is I’ve come a looooong way. BUT, the success you see inside of my business today didn’t just happen overnight. It happened over a decade (I started blogging almost 10 years ago).

 

Seriously, let’s let that sink in—it took me nearly a DECADE to create a PROFITABLE business.

 

So for those of you who are SO damn passionate about what you’re doing in the world, but you’re frustrated about all the time/money/energy/sacrifices…I get it.

 

For those of you who want to make this works SOOOO badly, but you just don’t know if it’s possible…it is.

 

I’m not saying it easy, or will happen overnight, but you truly can create a life and business you’re obsessed with that fuels and fulfills you like craaazy.
